Safely does it…

In petrochemicals you can never get too good at safety and when revitalising its approach Shell was determined to further reduce the number of incidents by tackling the root causes.

As part of a wider change programme Ken supported he spearheaded two high-profile approaches reaching across all Shell’s employees and its contractor base – Safety Day and the ‘life-saving rules’.

Over 140,000 staff and contractors worldwide took part in the annual Safety Day,  co-ordinated by Ken, during which sites and teams ran all manner of events to raise awareness, share learnings and find improvements under the theme of ‘Do the right thing’.

Safety Day also provided the incoming CEO Peter Voser with an ideal platform to show his commitment to running a safe business — involving himself in a series of events at several locations.

Great health and safety performance comes from having clear rules and procedures plus a commitment throughout the workforce to follow them.

Ken also co-ordinated the communications for the global launch of Shell’s ’12 life-saving rules’ which tackled the normal working scenarios where failing to do things properly were most likely to lead to serious injury or death.

The rules contributed to a significant reduction in health and safety incidents. While it is impossible to say exactly who is alive or uninjured because of these changes it is certain more families and friends are able to welcome their loved ones back at the end of the working day than would otherwise have been the case.
